Why Should You Remove Bats?

While bats are beneficial creatures, they pose home and health risks when they venture indoors.

Risk of Rabies

Bats are one of the most common carriers of rabies. Rabies can result from bites, scratches, and even holding bats. Although bat bites are rare, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Bats will only bite when they feel threatened.

Risk of Histoplasmosis

Histoplasmosis is a lung infection resulting from inhaling a fungus in dried bat guano. If droppings dry up and become airborne, it can be detrimental to your health. Symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, chest pain, and body aches.

Structural Damage to Your Home

Bat droppings can cause significant structural damage to your house. Large accumulations of bat guano can stain ceilings, walls, and floors.

Unpleasant Odors

Over time, the smell of bat guano can become quite unpleasant.

Parasites

Bats also host parasites like fleas, ticks, and mites.

Allergies

Bat infestations can also cause allergic reactions in some individuals, including asthma and congestion.

Step 1: Bat Inspection

A Complete Home Inspection

A certified professional will perform a detailed home inspection of the whole structure to determine exactly how the bats are getting in and out of the building. Bats can squeeze through holes the size of a quarter. Roof vents, gables, ridge caps, fascia, chimneys, and windows are common points of entry for bats.

Step 2: Bat Removal & Exclusion

Let's Bat Proof Your Home!

The most effective and humane way to remove bats is by utilizing a bat valve along with a home exclusion. A bat valve is a one-way door that allows bats to exit your home but prevents re-entry.

Once bat valves are installed, our bat specialists will seal up all other entry points, allowing bats to only exit through the valves. The removal process typically takes 4-8 days. We will perform a final inspection before removing the valves. After removing the valves, the last entry points will be sealed, leaving your home bat-free!

Bat Maternity Season

Bat exclusions are prohibited June 1 – August 15 to protect Wisconsin’s little brown and big brown bats during maternity season. Exclusions occurring during this period will separate mothers from their flightless pups, leaving the pups to die of starvation and potentially worsening the homeowners’ bat problem.

Exclusions may be completed if there is a severe health or safety risk to humans, especially in homes with toddlers, elderly individuals, or disabled individuals that can not properly communicate an interaction with a bat. You must submit a health exemption form to the DNR to get approved for a bat exclusion during the maternity season. Call us at 262-242-4390 for more details.

Step 3: Restoration & Sanitation

Clean Up Messes Left Behind

Bat colonies contaminate attics and houses with guano, urine, parasites, and other harmful substances. These contaminated materials are a serious health hazard and should be removed immediately!

We offer comprehensive restoration services to safely remove and sanitize any contaminated materials left behind from bat infestations. In larger infestations, an entire attic re-insulation may be required.

Sanitation

Cleaning and removing bat guano is a very detailed and essential process. Bat droppings contaminate attic insulation and your home’s air filtration. Our professionals use full hazmat gear and respirators to safely remove bat guano. They will then treat problem areas with a special commercial-grade decontaminating agent to sanitize, eliminate musty odors, and break down smaller organic waste.

Attic Insulation Services

If you have a large bat infestation, an entire attic re-insulation may be required to remove the large amounts of hazardous waste left behind from the bat colony. Our professionals use a high-power vacuum to suck out and dispose of the contaminated debris. A special commercial-grade decontaminating agent will be used to sanitize and break down organic waste.

Your attic is clean, but we are not finished yet. Your attic needs to be re-insulated to the proper R-Value. An R-Value is a measure of insulation’s ability to resist heat flow. The higher the R-Value, the better the thermal performance of insulation.

The recommended R-Value for the state of Wisconsin is R-49, and this meets all local city codes. We use Owns Corning Pink Fiberglass Blown-In insulation which we feel is the best product currently on the market. Before installing the insulation, our technicians will inspect your home for proper air ventilation to prevent any harmful mold and mildew buildups in the attic. The insulation is then blown into the attic using an Attic Cat Machine with a hose system that efficiently installs the new insulation. The cleanout process usually takes a full day to complete.

NOTE: Sometimes, your insurance company may pay for your attic insulation to be removed and cleanout. Please ask our technician for further details. Due note this only applies to attics contaminated by raccoons and bats.
